One day, when many tax collectors & other low-lifes came to listen to Jesus (140), the Pharisees and the teachers of the law started grumbling, “This man welcomes these low-lifes & even eats with them!” Then Jesus, who was aware of their grumbling, told them these stories:
“What do you think a man does who has lost just one of his hundred sheep? Doesn’t he leave the other ninety-nine grazing on the hillside, and go to look for that lost sheep? And when he finds it, he is filled with joy. So he puts it on his shoulders, carries it back home, and calls his friends & neighbors together to celebrate with him.
“In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over just one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine respectable people who think they don’t need to repent.
“Or what do you think about a woman who has lost just one of her ten silver coins? Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep her house, and look everywhere until she finds that lost coin? And when she finds it, she calls her friends & neighbors together to celebrate with her.
“In the same way, the angels of God rejoice over just one sinner who repents.”
