Angel Of God

After the Saturday Sabbath, in the pre-dawn hour on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene and two other women went to the tomb where Jesus had been buried (217).  They brought more spices to anoint the body of Jesus.  On the way they said to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”

Suddenly there was another violent earthquake.  An angel of God came down from heaven, rolled the stone away & sat on it. His appearance was like lightning & his clothes were white as snow.

The guards at the tomb were so afraid that they fainted dead away. Also full of fear, the three women bowed down to the ground before the angel.  He began speaking kindly to them.

“You must not be afraid.  I know you’re looking for the body of Jesus, but he is not here.  He has been raised from death back to life.

“Remember that Jesus told you that he would be handed over to sinful men and that he would be crucified.  But remember that he also told you he would rise to life after three days.”

The angel then invited the women to look inside the empty tomb:  “Come here & see the place where he was lying.”  After they had done so, the angel gave them these instructions:

“Now go and give this message to his friends, including Peter: ‘Jesus is going to Galilee ahead of you; there you will see him, just as he told you.'”

  1. The guards may have been placed there to guard the tomb, but it is a wonderful thing that they were really there to be witnesses of the facts of the resurrection of Lord Jesus.
