The Council

When they were not found in the jail, all the chief priests & the temple guards wondered what had happened to the 12 witnesses (240). Then another man came in with this report: “Those men you put in jail are in the temple teaching the people!”

So the guards went & brought the witnesses back from the temple. They didn’t use force, however, because they were afraid that the people might attack them.

The witnesses were brought in before the council & questioned by the High Priest, who said, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in the name of this man Jesus.  But you have defied these orders & taught the people all over Jerusalem that we are responsible for his death!”

Peter and the other witnesses never wavered in their answer.  “We must obey God, not men! God raised Jesus from death, after you had killed him by nailing him to a cross. God sent Jesus to be our savior, to give the people of Israel the opportunity to repent & have their sins forgiven. We are witnesses to these things — we and the Holy Spirit of God, who is given by God as a gift to those who obey him.”

When the members of the council heard this, they were so furious that they wanted to have the 12 witnesses put to death on the spot!
